TSI is  a branding acronym for Turbocharged Stratified Injection or Twincharged Stratified Injection, and used by Volkswagen Group companies Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda. Audi models use TFSI (Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection) as a branding acronym referring to the same type of engines.

Fitted with a 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine and a six speed manual gearbox as standard, the Scirocco R develops 265 PS (261 HP) and 350Nm (258 lbs ft) of torque while the Golf R produces 270 PS (266 HP) and 350Nm (258 lbs ft) of torque.  A six-speed DSG gearbox is available as an option  on both models.

The range-topping Scirocco R accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.0 seconds, falling to 5.8 seconds when equipped with the DSG gearbox, while achieving a combined figure of 6.8 l/100km (34.9 mpg), 6.7 l/100km (DSG 35.3 mpg) and 189 g/km of CO2 (187 for DSG).

The Golf R is the fastest accelerating Volkswagen ever produced, with a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62mph) sprint taking just 5.7 seconds.  As with the Scirocco, the DSG gearbox shaves a further two tenths of a second from this time, falling to 5.5 seconds.  Despite this impressive performance, the Golf R returns 7.1 l/100km (33.2 mpg), 7.0 l/100km (DSG 33.6 mpg) on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 199 g/km (195g DSG).

Both the Scirocco R and Golf R models have a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).  For the first time on an ‘R’ model, the Scirocco R channels power though the front wheels and is fitted with the XDS electronic cross-axle traction control system to ensure improved grip in all conditions.  The Golf R, available in both three- and five-door bodystyles, uses a pre-charged hydraulic version of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION four wheel drive system.  This system can react quicker than previous 4MOTION systems while also limiting torque to maximise traction and minimise wheelspin.

With this engine volkswagen has proved that down-sizing doesn’t mean down-grading. It’s innovative design has earned it five International Engine of the Year Awards to date, and this is the fourth year running it has triumphed in this category.  A frugal 1.4-litre engine, it can deliver up to 178bhp in certain applications due to the combination of petrol direct injection, a turbocharger, and a supercharger.

Power is only half the story, as the innovative TSI engine offers fuel economy benefits over its larger, similarly powered rivals, returning fuel consumption figures in the new-generation Volkswagen Golf of around 6.2 litres/100km (45.5mpg), compared with 10.6 litres/100km (26.6mpg) for Volkswagen’s 2-litre FSI, which is of comparable performance and power output.

After deciding the winner of each category, judges goes for the overall winner. VW’s little big engine accumulated 354 points from 65 judges all over the world defeating the BMW’s mighty engine by four judging points.
